Date: 2020 February 8 & 9
Location: Digital NEST Watsonville
Social Justice Theme: Civic engagement
Tech Tool:  Adobe Illustrator & Screenprinters
Community Partners: Cabrillo Community College Makerspace, Maria Cadenas , Nancy Faulstich - Regernacion
Participants: 32
Creations: Digital graphics expressing their political voice which they learned to screen print onto tote bags

Positive Growth:  Participants learned about political expression, historical and institutional barriers to political participation (voter suppression), and advocacy. Engaged in role-playing/hands on social justice activities, and collaboratively made their self-designed print from start to finish.
Lessons Learned:

  1. Intentionally building connections between different tech tools as a way to fully understand the entire process involved in producing a tangible creation generates a more holistic tech learning experience.

  2. When participants engage with a social justice topic that is personal to them and they are able to express it through a tangible creation, their learning experience becomes more gratifying.

  3. Involving community organizers who are already doing hands-on work in the field that relates to specific social justice topics can strengthen the participants' learning and motivate them to be more involved in the wider community.

  4. Clear division of labor and roles between organizers and facilitators make a more effective team dynamic
