ARCHIVE OF OUR WORK

This is an archive of our work featuring participant deliverables, tech and social justice curriculum and other learning resources.

Date: 2019 April 27
Location: Digital NEST in Watsonville
Social Justice Theme: Community dialogues with police

Tech Tool:  Adobe Illustrator
Community Partner: Youth Violence Prevention Task Force
Participants: 13
Creations: Event posters advocating for dialogues between youth in the community and police

Positive Growth:  Participants critically engaged in conversations regarding police reform, community dialogues and policing. Learned different approaches to graphic design, such as style guides and marketing tactics in order to increase awareness and advocate for social justice topics they cared about.
Lessons Learned:

  1. Tech learning is more approachable when the social justice issue is connected to their personal experiences and provides opportunity for participants to reflect on the ways the issue has affected them.

  2. It is important to focus on participant learning experiences with the tech tool rather than perfect deliverables for the community partner.

  3. A clean and organized Google site as a resource for participants is valuable for their learning experience.

  4. Communication with partners is key for recruitment and it is always best to recruit double the amount of participants for the event.
